American visitors find Dunmore East because the road from Waterford keeps going and the harbour at the end is one of the prettiest village scenes in Ireland. Here's the orientation you actually need.

What Dunmore East is (in American terms)

Population about 1,500 — smaller than most US small towns. A fishing harbour, cliff walks, thatched cottages painted in colours. Twelve kilometres (~7 miles) from Waterford City, on the Atlantic-facing south coast of Ireland. Co. Waterford. It's a village, not a town.

What 'pub food' means here

Don't expect a sports bar. Don't expect tasting menus. Expect bar food that's done seriously — local seafood from the boats, Irish beef, soups, sandwiches, hot plates. The Spinnaker Bar in the village is run by Peter (the new owner) and is doing food properly. Walk in, sit at the bar, order from the chalkboard.

Tipping

Tipping is appreciated, not expected. 10% on a sit-down meal is generous; not tipping at the bar is normal for a single drink. Ireland is not a 18-22% tipping culture.

Quick questions

Can I use a US credit card in Dunmore East?

Yes — most Irish pubs and restaurants take Visa and Mastercard. Tap-to-pay works on most terminals. Bring some Euro cash for smaller places.

How does tipping work?

10% on a sit-down meal is generous; rounding up at the bar is fine. Not the obligatory 20% you're used to.

Is Dunmore East worth a stop on a south-Ireland road trip?

Yes — half a day to a full day works well. Pair with Hook Head across the harbour, or the Copper Coast west of Tramore.
