Bright Evening Deck Meal in Dunmore East
The deck at The Spinnaker Bar, Lower Village, Dunmore East faces south-west over the harbour mouth. From late May through August the evening sun holds until half-nine or later. You sit outside with a cold pint, watch the day-boats tie up, and eat seafood that came off those boats that morning. Peter runs the kitchen and the bar himself. Ring Peter on (051) 383 133 to book a table on Friday or Sunday evenings, or for any group of six or more.
Why the Deck Catches the Light
Dunmore East sits at the mouth of Waterford Harbour where the River Suir meets the Celtic Sea. The harbour opens south-east. The Spinnaker Bar sits on the west side of the lower village harbour, deck facing south-west. The sun tracks across the water from mid-afternoon and holds over the horizon until after nine in June and July. The deck has bench seating and small tables. You can see the lifeboat station, the red lighthouse on the east pier, and the trawlers and day-boats working the moorings. The pastel cottages climb the hill behind you. The air smells of salt and diesel and chips.
Weekends from June through August, Peter books live music on the deck. Ash and Laura play some weekends — check Peter's Facebook page for who's on this week. Walk-ins welcome most days. Ring Peter on (051) 383 133 for Friday and Sunday evenings or groups of six or more.

When to Come for the Best Light
Late May through August gives you the longest evenings. June and July the sun sets after nine. You can sit on the deck from six until half-nine in full daylight. August shortens a little but still bright until after eight. The deck fills Friday and Sunday evenings. Saturday afternoons get busy when the weather holds. Weekday evenings in June and July you usually get a table without booking, but ring Peter on (051) 383 133 if you want to be sure. September the evenings shorten fast but the first two weeks can still be warm and bright if the weather holds.
If the wind comes from the north or west, the deck stays calm. South-east wind off the sea can blow hard, but Peter has the inside dining room with harbour windows if the deck's too rough. The big screen shows every Premier League and GAA match, so if there's a match on the atmosphere moves indoors.
Getting to The Spinnaker from Waterford City
Dunmore East is twelve kilometres south-east of Waterford City. Drive the R683 through Passage East Road, turn south at the roundabout, follow signs for Dunmore East. Twenty minutes in light traffic. The village has two levels — upper and lower. The Spinnaker Bar is in the lower village on the harbour. Park on the road above the harbour or in the small car park near the lifeboat station. Walk down to the water. The Spinnaker is the pub on the harbour front with the deck over the water.
If you're walking the Doneraile cliff walk, the loop takes about ninety minutes from the lower village. Start at the beach near the lifeboat station, follow the path east along the cliffs, loop back through the upper village. You come down the hill into the lower village and The Spinnaker is right there. Cold pint and fresh seafood at the end of the walk.
The Working Harbour Atmosphere
Dunmore East is a working fishing village. Population about fifteen hundred. The trawlers and day-boats work out of this harbour. The men who fish tie up at the same moorings you're looking at from the deck. The Spinnaker Bar is the harbour pub. Cold pints. Fresh local seafood. No pretence. Peter knows the fishermen by name. The seafood chowder has fish and shellfish that came off the boats that morning. The beer-battered fish is the same. The mussels, the prawns, the white fish in the seafood pie.
The village has thatched cottages, pastel paint, narrow roads. Counsellor's Strand is the small beach east of the harbour. The red lighthouse marks the harbour mouth. The cliff walk — Doneraile — gives you views over the Celtic Sea and back across Waterford Harbour to the Hook Peninsula. Sailing, fishing, walking. The village fills in summer but stays quiet. Ring Peter on (051) 383 133 to book your deck table for a bright evening meal over the harbour.
