Doneraile Walk to Lunch in Dunmore East
The Doneraile cliff walk starts at the western end of Dunmore East harbour and loops 5 kilometres around the headland above the Celtic Sea. You'll walk 90 minutes through gorse and sea pinks, past the lookout tower, down to Counsellor's Strand, and back along the shoreline path to the village. When you finish, The Spinnaker Bar is 200 metres from the trailhead at the harbour, and Peter will have seafood chowder, beer-battered fish, and cold pints waiting. This post tells you where the walk starts, what you'll see, and what Peter's serving at the end of it.
Where the Doneraile Walk Starts and What the Route Looks Like
The Doneraile walk starts at the western end of Dunmore East harbour, past the lifeboat station. Park at the public car park near the beach (free), walk west along the harbour road until you see the green signpost for Doneraile Walk on your left. The path climbs through a gap in the houses, then turns into a gravel and grass trail along the cliff edge. You'll walk above black rock ledges where grey seals haul out at low tide, past yellow gorse in spring, purple heather in summer. The lookout tower sits halfway around the headland — stone, circular, built in the 1800s. From there the path drops down wooden steps to Counsellor's Strand, a small sandy cove between cliffs. The return leg follows the shoreline back to the village, passing thatched cottages painted pink, blue, yellow. Total distance 5 kilometres. Total time 90 minutes if you stop to look at the seals and take photos at the tower. Boots or trail runners, not sandals. The path can be muddy after rain.
What You'll See on the Doneraile Cliff Walk
You'll see the mouth of Waterford Harbour where the River Suir meets the Celtic Sea. On clear days you can see Hook Head lighthouse to the east, the Copper Coast cliffs to the west. Gannets dive offshore. Cormorants dry their wings on the rocks below. Grey seals bob in the kelp beds — sometimes twenty or thirty of them in a raft. The lookout tower was built during the Napoleonic Wars to watch for French ships. The walls are two feet thick. Sheep graze the headland grass. In April and May the gorse blooms bright yellow and smells like coconut. Counsellor's Strand is sheltered, good for a paddle if the tide is in. The cliffs are Old Red Sandstone, rust-coloured, laid down 400 million years ago. The path back into the village passes gardens with fuchsia hedges and stone walls covered in ivy. You'll hear the fishing boats and smell diesel and salt when you get close to the harbour again.

Why Dunmore East Works for a Walk-and-Lunch Day Trip
Dunmore East sits 12 kilometres south-east of Waterford City, 20 minutes by car. The village is small — population 1,500 — so you're never far from the harbour. The Doneraile walk is the main cliff trail, but you can also walk east along the coast road to the red and white navigation tower, or explore the lanes behind the harbour where the thatched cottages sit. The fishing fleet works out of Dunmore — trawlers, crabbers, day-boats — so the harbour smells like salt and rope and diesel. Counsellor's Strand is quiet even in summer. The cliff path is open all year, no gate, no admission charge. After the walk you can sit on the deck at The Spinnaker with a cold pint and watch the boats come in. Peter sometimes has live music on the deck at weekends — check Facebook for Ash & Laura or other local acts. The pub has the atmosphere of a working harbour bar, not a hotel restaurant. Every Premier League and GAA match on the big screen if you want to catch the score while you eat.
