The Doneraile Walk is the cliff path that runs north out of Dunmore East village, hugging the coastline above Counsellor's Strand, with views across Waterford Harbour to Hook Head. It's the walk every visitor should do, and the one most regulars repeat without thinking about it.

Where the walk starts

The path begins on the road that climbs past the village shop and the post office, then turns out toward the headland. Look for the signposted footpath where the road bends inland — within five minutes the path opens up to the coast and the cliffs.

Distance and difficulty

The full loop is roughly 2 km and takes 40-60 minutes at an easy pace. The path is grass and packed earth most of the way, with a couple of stiles. There are no major climbs, but there's a cliff edge and it's exposed — keep children and dogs on the inland side.

What you'll see

On a clear day the view across Waterford Harbour to Hook Head lighthouse is the photograph everyone wants. Closer in, you'll see the fishing fleet leaving harbour, gulls and gannets working the inshore waters, and on the right day a pod of dolphins running the harbour mouth. In summer the cliff is wildflowers — thrift, sea campion, kidney vetch.

After the walk

The path delivers you back into the village within striking distance of the harbour. Boots off, dog watered, then a table at The Spinnaker Bar — Peter has taken over and is doing food properly. Ring ahead on a Sunday.

Quick questions

Is the Doneraile Walk suitable for children?

Yes — but the cliff edge is unfenced in places. Hold smaller children's hands and keep dogs on a lead.

Can I do the cliff walk in wet weather?

It's a grass and earth path; it gets slippery in rain. Bring boots with grip and a waterproof. The views often improve as a squall clears.

Is there parking near the start?

Yes — village car park near the harbour, or roadside spaces on the way up. Don't block residents' driveways on the upper road.
