Dunmore East sunsets — particularly in May and August — are some of the south Irish coast's best. Here's how to time dinner so the light lands while you're eating.

When sunset actually happens

Mid-summer (June): sunset close to 10pm. Spring/autumn (April, September): 8-8.30pm. Winter (December): early — 4.30pm. Plan dinner to start 60-90 minutes before sunset to be seated through the light window.

The Spinnaker for sunset dinner

Book a 6.30-7pm slot in summer to be at the table through golden hour and into early sunset. The Spinnaker has windows and outdoor seating (weather permitting) — ring (051) 383 133 to ask about the right table for the light.

Before-or-after walk

If sunset is the photograph you want — walk the cliff path first, get the harbour-and-Hook-Head shot at the headland, then back to The Spinnaker for the meal as the light drops. The walk takes 40-60 minutes; time it back from the published sunset.

Winter sunsets

December and January give 4pm sunsets. Plan early dinner, or just have the late afternoon walk and let the meal warm you up after dark.
