What to Eat in Dunmore East This Weekend

Dunmore East is a working fishing village where day-boats land haddock, prawns and mussels six mornings a week. This weekend you want fresh seafood off the harbour, a cold pint, and maybe a Sunday roast if the weather turns. Peter runs the kitchen and bar at The Spinnaker Bar, Lower Village, Dunmore East, and he posts this week's menu and hours live on Facebook. Ring Peter on (051) 383 133 to book Friday or Sunday evening, or any group of six or more.

Fresh Seafood Off the Day-Boats

The trawlers tie up fifty metres from The Spinnaker Bar. Peter buys haddock, prawns and mussels direct from the skippers most mornings. The seafood chowder €13.50 comes with brown bread and changes by the catch. Mussels €14 are steamed with chorizo, sherry, cream and garlic bread. The prawn cocktail €12 is Marie Rose sauce, iceberg, brown bread. Beer-battered fish €22.50 is haddock off the boat, chips, mushy peas, tartar sauce. The seafood pie €23 is haddock, salmon, prawns, leeks, mash, parsley cream.

Peter posts what came in this morning on Facebook. If you want a table Friday or Sunday evening, ring Peter on (051) 383 133. Walk-in welcome most other days.

Sunday Roast on the Harbour

Sunday roast at The Spinnaker is roast beef, lamb or chicken on the day. Peter cooks it himself. Roast potatoes, Yorkshire pudding, seasonal vegetables, gravy. Price and cut change by the week so check Peter's Facebook page on Friday or Saturday morning.

Sunday afternoon the harbour is full of walkers finishing the Doneraile cliff path, families off Counsellor's Strand, sailors tying up. The deck fills fast. Ring Peter on (051) 383 133 to book a table if you're coming with four or more. Solo and couples usually get a spot at the bar or a two-top inside.

Lamb Shank, Steak, Curries

If you don't want seafood, Peter cooks a lamb shank €27 that falls off the bone. Mash, red wine jus, root vegetables. The 8oz striploin steak €37 is Irish beef, peppercorn or garlic butter, chips or mash, salad. Chicken korma €22 and vegetable korma €20 come with rice and naan bread. The beef burger €20 is bacon, cheese, relish, brioche bun, chips.

Peter does wings €14 buffalo or BBQ, Greek salad €11, and pizzas €13.50–€21. Sides are €5: chips, mash, vegetables, salad. Desserts are €8.95: cheesecake, crème brûlée, strawberry mousse, chocolate orange tart. Email Peter at spinnakerbardunmore@gmail.com for the full menu or message him on Facebook.

Live Music on the Deck This Weekend

The Spinnaker Bar has live music on the deck most Saturday and Sunday afternoons when the weather holds. Ash and Laura play some weekends but the lineup changes. Peter posts who's on this week on Facebook by Thursday or Friday.

The deck overlooks the harbour. Trawlers, yachts, the lifeboat station. Gulls on the pilings. If it rains, the music moves inside. Walk-in welcome for music sessions but ring Peter on (051) 383 133 if you want a guaranteed table for food during the set.
