Cliff Loop Portally to Dunmore East: Food After Your Walk
The cliff loop from Portally Cove round to Dunmore East harbour gives you sweeping views of the Celtic Sea, Waterford Harbour mouth, and the Hook Peninsula across the water. Three kilometres of coast path, thatched cottages, and working boats. When you drop into Lower Village at the end, The Spinnaker Bar sits on the harbour with cold pints and fresh seafood straight off the day-boats.
The Portally to Dunmore Cliff Loop Walk
Start at Portally Cove car park on the eastern edge of Dunmore East village. The loop runs west along the cliff edge, past the old coastguard station, then drops down into Lower Village at the harbour. Three kilometres total, allow an hour at walking pace with photo stops. The path is dirt and grass, uneven in places, exposed to wind off the Celtic Sea. Wear proper shoes.
You see the Suir estuary meeting the sea, Hook Head lighthouse across the water, fishing trawlers working the channel. Seabirds wheel overhead. The path passes above Counsellor's Strand, cuts through gorse and blackthorn, then descends stone steps into the village. Thatched cottages in pastel paint line the final stretch. The harbour opens up below you, working boats tied along the quay, The Spinnaker Bar on the waterfront.
Food at The Spinnaker After the Walk
Peter runs the kitchen and bar at The Spinnaker Bar, Lower Village, Dunmore East. He took over recently. Fresh seafood comes off the day-boats tied fifty metres from the door. Beer-battered fish €22.50, seafood chowder €13.50, mussels €14 with chorizo and garlic bread, prawn cocktail €12, seafood pie €23. If you walked the loop on Sunday, Peter does a roast on the day. Lamb shank €27 if you want something heavier. Cold pints pulled at the bar.
The pub sits directly on the harbour, working-pub atmosphere, big screen for Premier League and GAA matches at weekends. Walk-ins welcome most days. If you're finishing the loop on a Friday or Sunday evening, or you're bringing a group of six or more, ring Peter on (051) 383 133 to book. He posts this week's hours on Facebook.
What Else Is On the Menu
Beyond seafood, Peter serves 8oz striploin steak €37, beef burger €20, chicken korma €22 with rice and naan, vegetable korma €20, pizzas €13.50 to €21, buffalo or BBQ wings €14, Greek salad €11. Desserts €8.95: cheesecake, crème brûlée, strawberry mousse, chocolate orange tart. Sides €5: chips, mash, vegetables, salad. Everything cooked fresh in the pub kitchen.
If you finish the walk hungry, the portions are solid. The chowder is thick with fish and shellfish, the beer batter on the fish is crisp, the lamb shank falls off the bone. Cold pint of lager or Guinness to wash it down. The harbour view from the window tables shows the boats that landed your dinner.
Getting to Portally Cove to Start the Loop
Portally Cove is on the eastern side of Dunmore East village, signposted from the main road through the village. Follow the coast road east past the golf club, car park on your left at the cove. Free parking. If you're driving from Waterford City, take the R683 south-east twelve kilometres, follow signs for Dunmore East, then Portally Cove once you're in the village.
The loop is a circuit, so you finish back at Portally car park if you walk the full route. If you want to walk one way cliff-to-harbour and skip the return leg, park at Lower Village near The Spinnaker and walk out to Portally, then turn back. The cliff views are better walking west towards the village, sun behind you in the afternoon.
Timing the Walk and the Food
Allow an hour for the loop walk at normal pace, ninety minutes if you stop for photos and linger at viewpoints. Add another hour minimum for food and a pint at The Spinnaker after. If you're planning to walk on a Friday or Sunday evening, ring Peter on (051) 383 133 before you set off to confirm the pub is serving food when you arrive. Walk-ins are fine most other days.
Check Facebook for this week's hours and any live music on the deck at weekends. Ash and Laura play sometimes. The deck overlooks the harbour, good spot for a pint in the sun after the cliff wind.
