Dunmore East is one of Ireland's oldest continuously working fishing harbours. Long after the mail-boat days ended in the 1830s, the harbour found its purpose in the inshore fleet — and that purpose has held for nearly two centuries.

The grounds the fleet works

The boats out of Dunmore East work the inshore waters from the Saltee Islands round to the Copper Coast — rich, mixed ground over sand and reef. The Celtic Sea here produces a varied catch: herring and mackerel in season, langoustines (Dublin Bay prawns) almost year-round, lobster and brown crab from inshore pots, and whitefish through the deeper-water months.

The seasonal pattern

Winter brings herring and the heavier fish. Spring and summer are the prawn months — Dunmore East prawns are well known on south-east Irish menus. Autumn returns the mackerel close in. The pattern is older than written records; the names of the boats change but the rhythm doesn't.

The Dunmore East lifeboat

RNLI Dunmore East has had a lifeboat station since the 1850s. The current Severn-class boat is one of the largest in the RNLI fleet, capable of working far out into the Celtic Sea in serious weather. The station's volunteer crew is drawn from the village and the surrounding parishes — a reminder that the harbour is not a museum but a working community.

What this means for the dinner plate

Local fish on a local menu is not a marketing line in Dunmore East — it's the practical consequence of geography. The Spinnaker Bar puts the fresh catch on the menu where it makes sense. Peter is the new owner and is doing it properly. Ring ahead for the seafood evenings.

Quick questions

Can I buy fresh fish at the harbour?

Fish landed at Dunmore East mostly goes to wholesale buyers, not directly off the boat. The best route to local seafood is at a sit-down meal that buys from the fleet.

When is the prawn season?

Langoustines (Dublin Bay prawns) are landed throughout much of the year, with seasonal closures. Peak fresh availability is spring to early autumn.

How big is the Dunmore East fishing fleet?

A working core of inshore vessels — the size varies year to year. The harbour also hosts boats from neighbouring ports during peak seasons.
