The Loop Walk from The Spinnaker Bar — Dunmore East

The Loop Walk is a 5 km harbour circuit that starts and finishes at The Spinnaker Bar, Lower Village, Dunmore East. You walk the working harbour wall, pass the lifeboat station, loop around the upper village through thatched cottages, and come back down to the water. Takes about 90 minutes at walking pace. The Spinnaker is your natural start and finish point — Peter serves cold pints and fresh seafood when you're done. Ring Peter on (051) 383 133 if you're bringing a group of six or more, or email spinnakerbardunmore@gmail.com.

The Loop Walk Route — Where It Goes

Start at The Spinnaker Bar on the harbour. Walk east along the pier road past the fishing boats and trawlers. You'll see the red-and-white lighthouse at the harbour mouth. Keep going past the lifeboat station — the RNLI keep a Trent-class all-weather boat here. The road curves up towards the upper village. You pass the Strand Inn junction, then walk inland through narrow roads lined with pastel-painted thatched cottages. The route loops back down through the village centre, past the church, and returns to Lower Village where The Spinnaker sits on the harbour. The whole circuit is 5 km, mostly flat with one gentle climb through the upper village. No stiles, no rough ground. Paved roads and footpaths the whole way. You can walk it in runners.

What You See on the Loop

The harbour is a working fishing port. Day-boats land hake, monkfish, prawns, crab. You'll see nets drying, lobster pots stacked, and trawlers tied up. The lighthouse marks the harbour mouth where the River Suir meets the Celtic Sea. Across the water you can see the Hook Peninsula and the old lighthouse tower at Hook Head. The upper village is thatched cottages with slate roofs, painted pink, yellow, cream. Fuchsia hedges in summer. The church is St. Andrew's, built 1866. As you loop back down you get views over Waterford Harbour towards Passage East. On a clear day you can see the Comeragh Mountains inland. Dunmore East is a real village — 1,500 people, fishing families, sailing club, primary school. Not a resort.

If you eat first, park, have Peter's prawn cocktail €12 or wings €14 (buffalo or bbq), then walk it off on the harbour. Either way works. The Loop is too short to need packed food — you're never more than 2 km from The Spinnaker. If you're walking with kids, the harbour wall and lighthouse are the interest points. No cliffs, no steep drops. The upper village loop is quiet roads with footpaths. Safe for families. Peter serves pizzas €13.50-€21 if you have kids who won't eat seafood.
