The Spinnaker Bar: A Guide for First-Timers

Never been to The Spinnaker before? Here's what you need to know — where to find it, what to eat, when to come, and why people keep coming back.

Where exactly is it?

The Spinnaker Bar is on the harbour in Dunmore East, Co. Waterford — about 17 kilometres south of Waterford city, a 20-minute drive on the R684. If you're coming from Tramore, it's roughly 22km and about 25 minutes. From Wexford, allow around 45 minutes.

Dunmore East is a small village — you won't get lost. The harbour is at the centre of it, and The Spinnaker is right there on the waterfront. If you can see the fishing boats, you're in the right place.

Parking: There is parking at and around the harbour. In peak summer it gets busy — arrive early or walk down from the village.

The food

The Spinnaker serves proper pub food — substantial, well-made, and heavy on the seafood. Dunmore East is one of Ireland's busiest fishing harbours (second only to Killybegs by fish landed), which means fresh fish isn't a marketing claim here. It's a fact of the location.

Expect seafood dishes alongside the usual pub menu staples. The bar does lunch and dinner, and the portions are what you'd expect from a working harbour pub rather than a restaurant trying too hard. Check the current menu here.

If you have dietary requirements, ring ahead — (051) 383 133 — and the team will accommodate where they can.

When to come

Summer (June–August)

The busiest time. The harbour is full of visiting yachts, the village is full of visitors, and The Spinnaker is full of people who've come a long way for a pint by the water. Booking is strongly recommended for Friday and Sunday evenings. Walk-ins are possible midweek but not guaranteed.

Off-season

Dunmore East is a different place in November. Quieter, more local, windier. The Spinnaker is the warmest thing for miles on a wet Tuesday, and the food is just as good. Some people prefer it this way.

Big match days

The bar shows live sport — GAA, Premier League, Six Nations, Champions League, Cheltenham. If there's a match you want to watch, ring ahead to check it's on and book your table. The sports page has more detail.

Music nights

The Spinnaker hosts live music — traditional Irish sessions, live bands, acoustic nights. Check the music page and the Facebook page for upcoming gigs. Summer weekends are the most likely time to walk in to something unplanned.

Why the name?

A spinnaker is a sailing sail — the large, brightly coloured one that a yacht deploys when running downwind. Dunmore East has had a sailing club, the Waterford Harbour Sailing Club, since 1934. The harbour fills with visiting yachts every summer. A pub on the waterfront called The Spinnaker isn't a random choice — it's a statement about where it is and what the village is about.

How to book

The simplest way is to ring: (051) 383 133. The team will hold your table. No app, no booking fee, no deposit. You can also email spinnakerbardunmore@gmail.com — useful for larger groups or bookings a few days out.

Groups of six or more: ring ahead. Groups of 12+: give a day's notice if you can.

What's nearby

Dunmore East itself is worth exploring beyond the bar. The cliff walk to Portally and Ballymacaw is about 7km and passes what may be Ireland's longest sea cave at Rathmoylan. Lawlor's Beach is a short walk from the harbour. The Dunmore East Adventure Centre operates kayaking and other activities in season.

The village also has a small golf course on the cliff top with views over Waterford Bay — and an annual bluegrass festival at the end of August, which draws musicians from around the country.

If you're making a day of it: arrive at Dunmore East, walk the cliffs, come back to The Spinnaker for food and a pint. It's a good day.
