A working fishing village on the Waterford coast — five beaches inside ten minutes, a cliff path over red sandstone, a harbour that still lands fish every day, and a bar on the waterfront to finish in. Here is how the locals would spend the day.
Start with the water. Counsellor's Strand is the village beach — sheltered, lifeguarded in summer, safe for most swimmers. Lady's Cove beside the harbour is the locals' quick-dip spot. Drive five to ten minutes and you add Portally Cove, Woodstown Strand's long flat sand, and the coves out the Copper Coast road. The village's signature walk: the Doneraile path runs along red sandstone cliffs with the Hook Peninsula across the water. Forty-five minutes out and back at an easy pace, longer if you keep going toward Portally. Kittiwakes nest on the cliffs below — Dunmore East hosts one of Ireland's best-known urban seabird colonies. Do it before lunch; the walk-then-lunch routine is a village institution.
Dunmore East is one of five designated fishery harbours in Ireland. Trawlers and day-boats land hake, haddock, crab and langoustines right below the village — stand on the pier in the late afternoon and you will see the catch come ashore. The harbour itself is a piece of engineering history, and the lighthouse at the end of the pier is the photo everyone leaves with.
The adventure centre by the harbour runs kayaking, SUP and sailing through the summer season, and the sailing club has been part of village life for over a century. Sea swimmers use Lady's Cove and Counsellor's year-round — there is always someone in, whatever the month.
Twenty minutes puts you in Waterford City (the Viking Triangle and the Greenway); the Copper Coast drive west is the best coastal scenery in the county; and the passage ferry at Ballyhack opens up Hook Head and its 800-year-old lighthouse. All of them finish naturally back in the village for dinner.
Every good Dunmore East day ends the same way: on the waterfront. The Spinnaker Bar sits on the harbour in the Lower Village — seafood chowder with homemade brown bread, beer-battered fresh fish, garlic mussels, cold pints, live music on the deck in summer.
